Carburetor Identification
for
Early Briggs & Stratton Engines

This document pictures many of the carburetors used on Briggs & Stratton engines up until about 1950 and the engine models where they were used. There were some variations on these carburetors and many of the engines used more than one type. Hopefully this listing will take care of most circumstances. The Carburetor type numbers are arbitrary and are for differentiation only.

Type A Carburetor

Type A

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used on the following Models:

A (5 digit), FJ, H, M, T, and possibly some early B's.


Type T Carburetor

Type T

This carburetor was manufactured by Tillotson for Briggs & Stratton and was used on certain versions of the same models that used the Type A Carburetor. The air horn/choke assembly is also used on the Type A carburetor.


Type C Carburetor

Type C

This carburetor was manufactured by Tillotson? for Briggs & Stratton and was used on the following Models:

FG, FHI, FI


Type G Carburetor

Type G

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used on the following Models

WI, NS


Type GQ Carburetor

Type GQ

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used exclusively on the Model U engine. Notice the two tubing connections on the bottom. This carburetor is a definite identifier for the Model U.


Type GF Carburetor

Type GF

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and is sort of a float version of the type G carburetor shown above. It also has a unique air cleaner. I have only seen it used on the Model WI.


Type F Carburetor

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used exclusively on the Model Y engine. This carburetor is a definite identifier for the Model Y.


Type H Carburetor

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used on the following Models

Type I Carburetor

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used on the following Models

WM, WMB, WMI, WI (early), PC-WM, PC-WMB


Type J Carburetor

Type J

This carburetor was manufactured by Tillotson and was used on the following Models:

PB, Q


Type K Carburetor

Type K

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and is called the small Flo-Jet two piece. It is used on the following Models:

A (6 Digit), I, N, WI?, 5, 6, 8


Kingston Carburetor

This carburetor was manufactured by Kingston and was used on High Speed versions of the following Models:

B, K, Z, and possibly others


Type L Carburetor

Type L

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and is called the Vacu-Jet. It is used on the following Models:

5S, 6S


Type M Carburetor

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used exclusively on the Model L engine. This carburetor is a definite identifier for the Model L.

Known as the "Peace Pipe" carburetor, this bronze carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used on the following models:

This bronze carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used on the following models:

Type Q carburetor

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and is called the large Flo-Jet two piece. It is used on the following Models:

B, K, R, Z, ZZ, ,14, 23


Type R Carburetor

This carburetor was manufactured by Tillotson and was used on the following Models:

Type S Carburetor

Type S

This carburetor was manufactured by Schebler? It is a modification of the Motor Wheel carburetor with provision for an air cleaner. The carburetor body is bronze. It was used on the following Models:

P, PB (early)


Type V Carburetor
Type V

This carburetor was manufactured by Briggs & Stratton and was used exclusively on the Model C engine. This carburetor is a definite identifier for the Model C.
